Angela's OSCE Training Journey with Lonsdale Education Centre

My OSCE Training Journey at Lonsdale,

I still remember walking into my face-to-face OSCE training session at Lonsdale, feeling super nervous. My hands were cold and shaking, my mind was racing. I could feel the weight of my dreams—and my family’s expectations back home in the Philippines. Passing the OSCE was my last step to becoming a registered nurse in New Zealand, and I just wanted to get it right.

But the moment I stepped into the training room, I started to relax. The structured approach, the friendly tutors, and the hands-on learning environment made me feel like I was in the right place. As someone who speaks English as a second language, I was worried about my communication skills, but the tutors were so patient and supportive.

Making Sense of the OSCE
At the start of the course, our amazing tutor Mel explained the OSCE process in a way that made it feel less scary. The format, the time limits, the key skills—we covered it all. Suddenly, the OSCE didn’t feel like this huge, impossible thing. It was something I could handle with the right training.

One of the first things we focused on was structured assessments. Whether it was a respiratory check using the ABCDE approach or a medication scenario, our tutors drilled us in a clear, step-by-step method to make sure we wouldn’t miss anything important.

Learning from My Mistakes

The best part of the training? It felt real. It wasn’t just about memorising things—it was about thinking on my feet, reacting to situations, and learning from my mistakes. And trust me, I made a lot of mistakes. But instead of feeling embarrassed, I got feedback that helped me improve.

The face-to-face training really helped. The tutors didn’t just tell me what I did wrong—they explained why and showed me how to fix it. They helped me build confidence in my clinical judgment, and we practiced again and again until it felt natural.

Time management was my biggest challenge. In the OSCE, every second counts, and at first, I kept running out of time. But with practice, guidance, and my tutor’s constant reminders to focus on ‘sticking to the task’, I got better. I started working faster, thinking smarter, and feeling more confident.

I’ll never forget the moment it all just clicked. During one of our mock exams, I handled my scenario smoothly—assessed my patient, gave a solid ISBAR, and stayed within time. When my tutor smiled and nodded, I knew I was ready.

Studying at My Own Pace

The online course was a game changer! It helped me build a strong foundation and let me study at my own pace, which was great because sometimes I needed extra time to absorb things.

One of the best things about Lonsdale was the takeaway resources and demonstration videos. Whenever I was unsure about something, I could go back and review. The videos were super helpful—they showed exactly what to do, step by step. Having access to these materials made a huge difference in my confidence.

And the face-to-face training? It was amazing because I got to apply everything in real-life scenarios. Practicing hands-on with immediate feedback from the tutors made such a big impact on my learning.

Walking in with Confidence

When my OSCE exam day arrived, I thought I’d be a nervous wreck. But surprisingly, I felt ready. I could hear my tutor’s voice in my head, reminding me what to do. I walked into each station with confidence, knowing I had practiced and practiced!

Guess what?? I passed!
